The team of sixteen students who were accompanied by three staff members of their school were received on arrival by the Institute’s Assistant Secretary, Rev Buka Fort who welcomed them and subsequently handed them over to Mallam Suleiman Muhammad, Head of the Institute’s Computing and Academic Support Services Unit. They were later joined by the Head of Web Management Unit (Mallam Auwal Adamu Gene) and the Institute’s Assistant Examinations Officer (Mallam Muhammad D. Abdullahi).

Speaking to the Web Management Crew who covered the trip, Leader of the visiting team Mr. Bola Solomon explained that their visit was actually a field trip excursion under their Computer Studies curriculum and the trip was aimed at exposing the students to practical realities outside the walls of the classrooms in their secondary school. Over the course of about three and half hours, the students were introduced to various aspects of computer science, computer engineering, software development, networking and general computer applications.

“The students have certainly learned a lot,” Mr. Bola said. “The staff of the Institute who had been here with us proved to be tremendously friendly and well-learned in their discipline. In fact I can assure you that the students have learned more than expected – even we the staff who escorted them here have learned some interesting facts too,” he further added.

“We hope they will eventually get admitted to study here in ABU so that they will learn more and become experts in the field of Information Technology.”

Some of the students who spoke with our crew expressed joy and satisfaction with the concepts they were introduced to, and most look forward to learning more in the field of information and communications technology. One of the students, Miss Faiza Abdullahi, expressed excitement over coming to the Centre to learn and see things practically. “I’m very excited to come to Iya Abubakar Computer Centre today. I learnt about quite a lot of things like computer programming and general computer basics”, she enthused.

Master Umar Hassan, who is also the Head Boy of the school, said his coming to the Centre with his colleagues have exposed him to the concept of computer programming and programming languages. “Now I understand better that we have at least two general classes of computer programming languages,” he said, “and these are high-level languages and low-level languages respectively. The high-level languages are like the normal human language while the low-level languages are the actual zeros and ones that the computer truly understands and executes. I hope to come to ABU and learn about software or computer engineering in the nearest future”.

Head Girl of the School, Miss Khadija AbdulNasir said she learned about data encryption, computer history, programming and software systems; adding “with all these things I’ve learned here today, I think I would want to put this knowledge to good use by creating software in the nearest future.”

Miss Maurine Julius also expressed gratitude to her teachers for coming up with the idea of bringing her and her colleagues to ABU for more exposure; adding that she also thanks the management of ABU for providing the facilities and the staff for being there to show and teach them things they never knew before. “If it hadn’t been for our teachers, we wouldn’t have been here today to learn and have more knowledge about computers and computing”, she affirmed.

In his remarks, Master Abdullahi Lawal also confirmed his excitement about coming to IAIICT with his colleagues on the field trip, saying he learnt about programming, graphics, and general computing. “Most importantly,”, he said, “I understand that the world has a lot more challenges now and many of these challenges will be solved with the help of computers. We’ve been informed here at Iya Abubakar Centre that computers are going to be just about everywhere, not to take over the jobs of people but to help people work smarter and solve problems... so it’s important that we know about computing as much as possible even if we are not going to be computer science or engineering professionals.”

Finally, Miss Fadeela Bello was visibly excited about the concept of data encryption and was determined to work on a project in that regard. She said “I’ve learnt about general computer systems, networking, hardware and software. But one of the most exciting things I’ve learned today is encryption, which is the changing of data to hide the meaning so as to make it secure against bad people. We’ve seen it demonstrated here in real live and we are going to seriously work on a project to implement encryption in various ways when we go back to our school. A big thank you to ABU Zaria!”

As part of a take-home exercise to keep them motivated, all the students were tasked by the Head of Web Management Unit to return to their school and work on a project that explores the fundamentals of data encryption, promising that he would follow up with a visit to their school to inspect their works a few weeks ahead.
